
The first session of the Tbilisi Mayor's Council on Disability Issues was held, at which the renewed composition of the council members discussed the challenges facing disabled people and ways to solve them. The session was chaired by Maia Asakashvili, co-chair of the Tbilisi Mayor's Council on Disability Issues, founder and director of the Association "IKA-21", and expert in disability issues. The session was also attended by heads and representatives of the city services of the capital's City Hall. Maia Asakashvili introduced the attendees to the issues on the agenda. The Council discussed increasing voucher funding for the purchase of hygiene products and medicines for people with severe, profound multiple disabilities and increasing the age limit for resort vouchers, subsidizing utility costs of day centers for people with disabilities, challenges facing people with disabilities in public transport, sign language, the launch of a retraining program for specialists in various fields, the creation of a community-based psychological support service, and challenges facing people with disabilities in the field of culture. The Tbilisi Mayor's Council on Disabled Persons is an advisory body to the Mayor of the capital, which, within its competence, discusses issues of creating the necessary conditions for dignified coexistence and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Its goal is to overcome the social isolation of people with disabilities, break the stereotypes that exist in society towards them, and showcase their real capabilities.
